Q & A

Yesterday evening I was greeted with a message from an old friend entitled “Fashion Advice”, it read as follows...

Hey Dana!
We are coming to NY for Christmas and doing dinner out. I have no idea what to wear that will be warm but also sophisticated/sexy. Any advice for this warm weather native?

Winter in New York is a gal’s time to shine. Literally! The hottest trends for evening may be all about black, but there is always room for some sparkle. To get this season’s hottest look, put on a pair of black opaque tights. Wolford are my favorite. They look great on, provide enough warmth on a cold winter night and are durable! Shop for a jewel tone dress. I propose something short and clingy. The tights will allow you to show a bit more leg without feeling self conscious or looking too scandalous.

If you are dreaming of a more fashion forward look try a sequin dress or blazer a la Lauren Conrad. Not too keen on the all over look opt for a pair of black skinny jeans and an embellished blouse. Finish off this look with a shrunken blazer, one small enough to fit under a coat. Packing one pair of shoes for nighttime? Black leather booties are the answer. They are definitely more comfy then your stilettos and are still sexy!

To cover up your look a coat is essential, but don’t sweat perfection. Being a warm weather girl I favor warmth over style. Now if you are moving to NYC you should invest in a statement coat, but a weekend getaway is another thing. Most restaurants have coat check at the door which means few people will have the chance to see you all bundled up. If you decide to buy a new coat choose one that is heavy and falls below the knee in a dark color for obvious reasons. You will be happy you opted for the extra weight and length when you are dealing with freezing temperatures. Trust me! A full length coat will never be the most flattering option; if this is a concern select one that nips at the waist.

Finally, on to the accessories. A scarf this time of year is a must, so use this opportunity to have some fun. Try an animal print or a bright fuchsia if you are wearing all black. I tend to leave my scarf on once I am inside so make sure your scarf doesn’t clash with the rest of your outfit. If your look doesn’t have enough sparkle try a large cocktail ring or my favorite look right now a big statement necklace. Don’t be afraid to experiment with these new looks, but you shouldn’t try to pull off all of these trends at the same time. Think…. less is more.

Remember ladies in New York anything goes!
